Discipleship: The Multiplying Ministry

Based on a book by Milton Jones

This is the bulletion article for this week. Feel free to comment if you feel so inclined.

-Josh

Jesus had the right idea when he modeled and taught discipleship. For example: What if a preacher and church decides they are going to try to reach the entire world with the message of the gospel. So they decide that they would travel each state, country and continent, assembling 500 people every day for the preacher to share the message of Christ with. Their goal is to keep going until the entire world hears the message of the gospel at least once. With the current world population at just under 6.9 billion, it would take this evangelistic team just over 37,682 years to reach the entire world. This is not Jesus’ model. Jesus' model is that we all make disciples. The plan is not simply to bring people to hear a gospel presentation. Jesus’ plan is to make disciples, which takes a more in depth commitment than simply presenting the gospel to a person.

Let’s say that each individual in a church of 100 people decided they were going to make 3 disciples that year. This means that they convert those people to Christ and then teach them to make 3 disciples the next year and so on. If the progression continued, 4.3 billion people would be disciples by year 17 of this church’s commitment and year 18 would see the entire world become disciples of Jesus. Who is the last person you discipled? Are you teaching at least one person a year to not only follow Jesus but also to pass on their faith to others? Do you even know how to teach someone to be a disciple of Jesus? Do you know how to be a disciple yourself? If your answer is “I don’t know” or “No” are you doing something about it?

Sunday Oct. 3

Just as Jesus bears the marks of his sacrifice, so we are to bear the marks of discipleship. In addition to this, we are to pass these marks of discipleship on to young disciples as we seek to mentor them and bring them to maturity in Christ.

On Sunday morning, we will be studying the disciple statements in the book of John (John 8:31; 13:34-35; and 15:8). Read these and their context.

What are the marks that disciples ought to bear? Are your marks evident?

Scripture References on Influence

The following is a list of scripture references on the purpose of Influence. I do not intend to suggest that these in any way are exhaustive. Please look at them and add others to the list as you study.

Acts 8:1-8: As the church spread because of the persecution they certainly went about preaching the gospel, but it is also a safe assumption that they were influencing many with their new and different way of life.

Clossians 4:5-6: Paul is trying to help the church members in Colossae know how they should live out their faith in their daily lives. His concern here is how Christians behave toward outsiders. He teaches that they should take advantage of every opportunity to influece them through their example and their speech.

1 Thessalonians 4:12: Here the Christians are being encouraged to lead a quiet and productive life as they wait upon the last day. Part of this reasoning that Paul uses to encourage them toward this life is that they may gain the respect of outsiders.

Matthew 5:16: This is the central text for the purpose of influence. The idea is that by being salt and light we will bring praise to God. Sure this passage can be viewed from the perspective of evangelism, but before we teach we must act.

Romans 12:17-21: Overcoming evil with good implies influence not coercion.

Sermons and Class for July 4

Ron McKee will be teaching the adult class Sunday, July 4 on the parable of the Mustard Seed and will follow up with a sermon on Faith.

Keith Hubbard will be hosting a discussion period Sunday evening, July 4. Since the beginning of the year we have been covering what the elders decided are the purposes of the church. To date we have covered Holiness, Worship, and Ministry and Service. Sunday evenings discussion period will be regarding our progress so far on these purposes. Please be prepared to share how you have been blessed or touched by our studies on these topics, as well as your vision for the future.

Sermon Texts

This Sunday during the sermon, I will be exploring the lists of gifts mentioned in some of the letters found in the NT. Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12:27-28; Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Peter 4:10. As we look at these gifts, each person present will be encouraged to try and identify their gift/s and to figure out how they can contribute to the church with that gift.

It would probably help you to review the passages before Sunday, and pray for God's powerful Spirit to fall mightily upon our congregation as we try to mobilize and become the church that God desires us to be.

God bless,

Josh

Bulletin Article

Just thought I would give you all a preview of this weeks bulletin article and give you a chance to make comments and give your thoughts.

Josh

What if my hands and feet did not belong to me?

What if for one day, my hands and feet did not belong to me?
And instead, God controlled all my coming, going and doing.
That morning I would awaken early to a foreign feeling,
My hands and feet moving of their own accord,
Pulling me out of bed and taking me to where I was supposed to be.

With the Bible open before my tired eyes,
I would sit and read, drinking in the holy melodies,
Telling me wondrous stories of a God who loves me,
And then they would pull me down, shut my eyes, my hands clasping,
Preparing for the day when my hands and feet did not belong to me.

To work I go with a whole new perspective coursing through my veins.
The customers sense that something is now different.
When faced with frustrating situations, my hands cover my mouth,
My feet take me away to the picture on the wall that says, “Love one another.”
Then they bring me to the counter with a promise to go back if I don’t change my ways.

On this day when my hands and feet no longer belong to me,
I go to lunch and sit with the outcast instead of my friends.
I treat people with respect as if they are more important than me.
On the way home instead of stopping by the coffee shop,
I visit the local nursing home seeking to bring blessing to someone’s day.

At the end of these twelve hours I begin to realize something very important.
Today should be no different than any other day.
I proclaim to be a Christ follower yet I steal the time that no longer belongs to me,
Using it for pleasure and leisure and my own special activity.
When instead I should be proclaiming Christ to the world for his honor and glory.

Sunday, April 18th

Class will be focused on the background of giving in the OT (Exodus 20:5; 34:14; Lev. 19:9-10; 25:8-38; 27:30-33). As well as the practice of giving in the NT (Acts 4:32-37; 6:1-3; 11:29-30; Rom. 15:25-27; 1 Cor. 16:1-3)

The text for the morning sermon will be Luke 16:1-13.

The Sunday evening sermon will be studying 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

I would like to get some discussion going on here if possible. Therefore, based on the material being studied, I would like to ask some kind of a discussion question for after Sunday so that we can continue studying and discussing all throughout the week.

The questions for this week is as follows

Are our giving habits in line with what the Bible teaches? If yes, how? If no, how can we change them to be more in tune with God's plan for giving?
